Private Equity (Secondaries)

Private Equity Secondaries involve the purchase of existing investor interests in private equity funds or portfolio assets, offering a differentiated path to accessing the private equity market. This strategy is highly attractive because it mitigates several risks associated with traditional primary fund investing, while providing commensurate private equity exposure.

Secondaries provide the portfolio with immediate exposure to mature, diversified private equity assets with established track records, virtually eliminating the “blind pool” risk inherent in new fund commitments. This asset maturity also significantly helps reduce the J-Curve effect—the initial period where management fees and slow asset appreciation can result in negative returns—leading to a faster pace of capital deployment and earlier distributions back to the portfolio.

A secondary investment can instantly diversify a portfolio across multiple underlying funds, General Partners (GPs), strategies, industries, and vintage years. Furthermore, secondaries are often purchased at a discount to Net Asset Value (NAV), creating an immediate margin of safety. Historically, secondaries have demonstrated strong downside protection and lower return dispersion compared to primary funds, serving as a stabilizing yet return-enhancing component of the family's broader private equity mandate.
